"Thousand-Yard Stare" CONFUSE 2 [1 PP/2 ranks]: 1 PP Effect: Mental Action: Free Range: Ranged Duration: Instant (Lasting) Extras: Action 2 Flaws: Range, Uncontrolled, Limited (blocked by any obstruction, including sunglasses, clear panes of glass, etc) Power Feats: None
Fiora is very careful not to make direct eye contact with anyone else without wearing her glasses.
"Front Door" SUPER-MOVEMENT 1 [1 PP/rank]: 1 PP Effect: Movement Action: Move Range: Personal Duration: Sustained Extras: Affects Others (+1 PP) Flaws: Limited (Requires door) Power Feats: None
Fiora’s method of ingress to the group’s communal hideout/home base. Utilizing a lone key attached to a faded fob, Fiora can turn any door with a tumbler lock into an entrance to the hideout until the door closes. The door must be attached to a frame (although the frame may be freestanding), and the door must have a tumbler lock (so a sliding patio door or a door with only an electronic card reader do not work).
ALTERNATE POWER SET
To Aru Kagaku No Railgun Damage 10 [science, fire] 2 pp/rank + 7 pp = 27 pp Type: Attack Action: Full-round Range: Ranged Saving Throw: Toughness Extras: Penetrating 4, Range Flaws: Action, Lethal, Unreliable 2 (1 shot per 3 rounds) Feats: Homing, Improved Range 3 (increment = power rank x 50), Ricochet 3, Alternate Power 6
After recent problems with the Filth and the loss of her secondary non-magical armament, Fiora has crowdsourced a new solution to further attacks. The limiting factors behind “mundane” science’s railgun development has been the lack of properly conductive materials for both barrel and magnetic field generation, as well as portability of a sufficient power source and wear on materials.
Fiora cheats. Frequently and blatantly.
Her developed version relies on many materials currently undiscovered by modern science, including no fewer than three alloys discovered by Doctor Plott (patent pending). A localized temporal distortion is contained in the barrel of the railgun to accelerate the projectile; the projectile spends several degrees of magnitude longer accelerating inside the barrel than its size would indicate, allowing a hundred-meter long barrel to be downsized to personnel use. Nearly 100% of the waste heat generated by firing is collected and recycled into gun’s battery, eliminating the need for unwieldy power supplies.
As a prototype, the railgun does suffer from several flaws. Chambering and accelerating the projectile still requires a not-inconsequential amount of time, and proper bracing is vital considering the incredible recoil. As a side-effect of the heat recycling and materials used, the barrel requires an extended length of time to cool before firing again; due to the potential results of firing early ranging from the Railgun simply not firing to exploding in a ball of fire, Fiora has included mechanical safeties as a preventative measure.
"Full Stop" TIME STOP 4 [6 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 26 PP Type: Attack Range: 10'/rank area around self Saving Throw: None Action: Standard Duration: Sustained Cost: 6 Extras/rank: No Save (2 PP), Area, Duration 2 Feats: Subtle 2 Flaws: Limited (Max duration is rank rounds, requires equivalent time to recharge)

"Flensing Wind" BLAST 10 [2 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 22 PP Effect: Attack Action: Standard Range: Ranged Duration: Instant Saving Throw: Toughness Extras: None Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2
Our perceptions of ourselves, our health and bodies, all rely on maintaining a single fixed position in time, and because we’re so focused on this single location it’s difficult to fully shift it. This spell takes the path of least resistance and does the exact opposite – causing a wide spray of distortion to “sandblast” the target. While too weak to shift more than the smallest portions of a person, like the abrasion of grains of sand the sheer amount of distortion quickly adds up.
*Alternate Power: "Flensing Storm" BLAST 8 [Cone] [3 PP/rank]: 24 PP Effect: Attack Action: Standard Range: Ranged Duration: Instant Saving Throw: Toughness Extras: Area (Cone) Flaws: None Power Feats:
More emphasis on the “shotgun” aspect of Flensing Wind.
*Alternate Power: "Shifting Sands" HEALING 10 [2 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 24 PP Effect: Alteration Action: Full Range: Touch Duration: Instant Saving Throw: None Extras: None Flaws: None Power Feats: Persistent, Regrowth
Using this spell either “resets” someone’s condition to earlier in their personal timeline when they weren’t wounded, or translates someone’s body to that of an alternate present where they’re uninjured. Fiora isn’t quite sure which just yet.
*Alternate Power: "Temporal Echoes" SUPER-SENSES 7 [Postcognition, Extended 3] [1 PP/rank +2]: 9 PP Effect: Sensory Action: Free Range: Personal Duration: Instant Extras: None Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2
This handy spell opens a window to view the past. While the past is potentially a fantastic resource, in practice it can be much more limited than at first glance. It takes time to build a proper connection to a given time or event to view, and can be prone to a number of disturbances – more “significant” events tend to overshadow less important ones.
*Alternate Power: "Timetwister" CONFUSE 10 [2 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 22 PP Effect: Mental Action: Standard Range: Perception Duration: Instant (Lasting) Extras: Area (Burst) Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2
The mind tends to filter out one’s choices to only the most important events. Normally it’s a simple matter to think a few steps ahead, even omitting intermediate steps as irrelevant; “I’m thirsty, so I’ll drink some water” without needing to consider getting up, retrieving a glass, and so on. With this spell, the target is bombarded with the virtually infinite number of possible actions that can be taken every instant, leaving them to stumble around, confused.
*Alternate Power: "Fractal Image" MIRROR IMAGE 4 [4 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 18 PP Effect: Visual Concealment Action: Free (active) Range: Personal Duration: Sustained Extras: None Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2
By stuttering the area around you with fragmented pieces of potential pasts and futures, you can create false images of yourself. Although your false versions are unable to interact with reality, they do provide additional moving targets for opponents to choose from.
*Alternate Power: "Temporal Pocket" QUICKNESS 10 [1 PP/2 ranks + 2 PP]: 7 PP Effect: General Action: Free Range: Personal Duration: Continuous Extras: None Flaws: One Type (mental) Power Feats: Subtle 2
Sometimes the best uses of time manipulation are the most routine ones. By creating a temporary pocket of distorted time, it’s possible to perform routine tasks in no time at all; being able to quickly come up with solutions to the most convoluted problems is just a matter of finding (or making) the time to think about it.
*Alternate Power: "Dust" DISINTEGRATE 2 [5 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 22 PP Effect: Damage, Drain, Affects Objects Action: Standard Range: Ranged Duration: Instant Extras: None Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2
Age erodes all things, and enhanced aging enhances the process.

"Street View" TELEPORT 8 [2 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 18 PP Effect: Movement Action: Move Range: Personal Duration: Instant Extras: Portal (2 PP) Flaws: Long Range (-1 PP), Action Power Feats: Alternate Power 6, Subtle 2
Time marches on is a universal maxim, as applicable to the arcane arts as it is to anything else. While a hundred years ago it would a year of research, dozens of books and consulting with experts in the field to identify an obscure species, today a fourteen year old kid would look it up on wikipedia, have her picture taken with it and tweeted it to her hundred closest followers in thirty seconds with her cellphone.
The Modern Magus is a crowdsourced collection of spells that started development around the turn of the millennium, dealing with the emergence of modern problems and solutions. Street View was developed by an enterprising mage who adapted modern imaging techniques to teleportation spells; rather than long, drawn-out spells written with aching precision and no margin for error for even the most well-known places, it’s now a far simpler solution to simply pull up a webcam or satellite image of location and use that instead.
**Alternate Power: "Citation Needed" SHIELD 10 [1 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 12 PP Effect: Defense Action: Free Range: Personal Duration: Sustained Extras: None Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2
Belief shapes reality, and today it’s a simple matter of a few edits and blog posts to make a large segment of humanity believe whatever you want. Conversely, locking people out of the loop and discrediting authors can limit their ability to influence popular opinion. With the help of this spell, the modern mage can set their own personal information to protected status, limiting the influence of others.
**Alternate Power: "No Roaming" DATALINK 4 [3 PP/rank + 3 PP]: 15 PP Effect: Sensory Action: Standard Range: Extended Duration: Sustained Extras: None Flaws: Action 2 Power Feats: Machine Control, Subtle 2
These days one can find a cell signal virtually anywhere and can walk through a dozen wireless networks on the way to get a cup of coffee while your robot gets a wireless signal to clean your floor. Using this spell you can make sure your signal strength is always at max – and unsecured networks are your playground.
**Alternate Power: "53 70 65 61 6b" COMPREHEND 2 (Machines) [2 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 6 PP Effect: Sensory Action: Reaction Range: Personal Duration: Continuous Extras: None Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2
Some people talk to their machines. Others know they talk back.
**Alternate Power: "Smudged Lens" OBSCURE 10 [Visual] [1 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 12 PP Effect: Sensory Action: Standard Range: Ranged Duration: Sustained Extras: None Flaws: Limited (Electronic Devices, -1 PP) Power Feats: Subtle 2
With technology growing ever cheaper and ever smaller, it’s virtually impossible to escape the electronic eye. Simply walking down the street to go to lunch means you can be captured on six traffic cameras, two webcams, fifty security cameras and hundreds of phones – all of which store your image a hundred times safer and a thousand times more reliably than the human eye. The Modern Magus has the solution, keeping you out of the eye in the sky. Notably, this was Fiora’s first addition to the spells in the Modern Magus project, cast on the fly while sneaking into a hospital.
**Alternate Power: "Eye in the Sky" ESP 10 [1 PP rank + 2 PP]: 12 PP Effect: Sensory Action: Move Range: Extended Duration: Concentration Extras: None Flaws: Limited (Electronic Devices with Lenses, -1 PP) Power Feats: Subtle 2
These days, as noted, cameras are everywhere. Rather than transmit an image to storage or broadcast it over the web, the Modern Magus can borrow these electronic eyes. This is especially useful in determining a camera’s field of view. Another of Fiora’s originals, discovered at roughly the same time.
**Alternate Power: "Machine Translation" COMPREHEND LANGUAGES 4 [4 PP/rank + 3 PP]: 15 PP Action: Reaction Range: Personal Duration: Continuous Saving Throw: None Extras: Zone of Translation Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2, Selective
In a global community, it helps if you can talk to everyone regardless of boundaries. This spell is an expanded application to more mundane translation software already in use; with it, you and all your friends (within 40 yards) can speak and understand any language flawlessly. Babel wishes it had it this good.
**Alternate Power: "Aether Goggles" SUPER-SENSES 4 [Magic Awareness, Time Awareness, Tracking, Trace Teleport] [1 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 6 PP Type: Sensory Action: None (passive) Range: Personal Duration: Continuous Saving Throw: None Extras: None Flaws: None Power Feats: Subtle 2
After her second night dorming with other magic-users, Fiora has deemed it prudent to create a method of identifying and tracking magical signatures via myPhone. Currently in testing before release on the MM site.
**Alternate Power: "Bottomless Pockets" DIMENSIONAL POCKET 5 [3 PP/rank + 2 PP]: 17 PP Action: Free/Reaction (active) Range: Touch Duration: Instant (lasting) Saving Throw: None Extras: Action 2 Flaws: Limited (Can't use on unwilling subjects, can't use as an attack) Power Feats: Subtle 2
The first step on the way to developing space-expanding magic for the dorm. Fiora is still working out the specifics of the effect: whether it creates “new” space, folds or stretches existing space, and whether you can put a pocket in a pocket. Results forthcoming.
Kosciej the Deathless (“Special K”)
A stray cat Fiora found around town. Seems to harbor a dread design to destroy the followers of the Lie and stick it to The Man, or sleep for
ten fifteen twenty twenty-three hours a day, whichever takes less effort.
The Fuego has been one of Fiora’s pet projects for a long time, finally actualized with the assistance of Doctor Plott. Roughly built around a motorcycle chassis, the machine sports two articulated arms mounted where the handlebars would be on a standard cycle; the arms are capable of fine manipulation, to the point that Fiora has successfully picked up an egg without crushing it (eventually). The wheels are mounted on two jointed “legs”, one forward and one rear.
The part requiring advanced mechanics and at least a little magic is the legs are capable of retracting and widening their stance, allowing the Fuego to perform more like a biped on inline skates. A powerful onboard computer deals with much of the handling issues with both the legs and arms, but driving the Fuego is as much knowing how the balancing programs will react as it is the programs themselves reacting.
Unless its more esoteric functions are used (manipulating arms, standing up) the Fuego generally passes at least cursory muster; it comes across as a custom machine, but with little more attention than that.

The biggest problem with modern armor manufacture is that different materials and compositions are required to protect against different threats, and there are few solutions that combine defense from multiple threats in one package. The requirements for protection from handguns and protection from knives are so different that any armor protecting from both is in effect two different armors worn together. The amount of comprehensive protection also scales directly with encumbrance and weight of the armor.
Fiora cheats. Using clever temporal manipulation, her coat always seems to have exactly the material and composition required at each moment. When stabbed, she turns out to have “always” been wearing a chainmail-like ceramic-coated mesh. When shot, the kevlar of the coat turns out to have had a ceramic plate directly underneath the impact site. This allows Fiora comprehensive protection at a mere fraction of the weight and general encumbrance of equivalent modern armor.
On Fiora’s long list of future projects is a further development of the idea utilizing Iris’s ability to create constructs to apply the idea to a large area. After witnessing a thaumonuclear strike, it seems prudent to attempt to create a reactive solution.
In many senses, Fiora Niles is the poster child for the modern mage. Orphaned at birth, Fiora spent her early years shuffled between foster homes. While nowhere near the horror stories that you hear about the system, Fiora never had a easy time of it. Being uprooted every few months is hard at even the best of times for a child, and it made Fiora a perpetual loner. Rather than stunt her growth, it instead encouraged it – changing schools was simplified when she had already learned the lessons months in advance.
Eventually, she simply decided she’d had enough of it and walked off; the overburdened and underfunded system just didn’t have the resources to find someone who didn’t want to be found. Machines and the internet became her constant companions, and she worked to turn her decided knack with them into something profitable. It wasn’t long before she had a modest income from advertising revenue before that bubble burst; it was just enough to have herself declared legally emancipated (after a little creative editing of financial records).
She regarded the unmarked envelope slipped under her motel door one morning with more than a little suspicion, but finally opened it after an identical envelope appeared every day for a week, even after she teleported from Nevada to New York. She eventually came to Disseptum Fractio more out of curiosity than anything else.
Fiora has a fair, easygoing face framed by blond hair, soft brown eyes usually hidden behind oversized sunglasses. While healthy, she’s never been very athletic, and seems to be a little thin for her age. She’s not exactly jaded, but her sense of humor can be very dry and she’s prone to sarcastic one-liners (the first time Dr. Plott introduced himself she deadpanned “Muhahahaha. Ha.”). Largely self-taught, she’s almost completely ignorant of tradition, insofar as magic goes – she sees little reason to draw a convoluted sigil in wendigo blood when a laser printer can do so in a fraction of the time (and less mess).
Fiora refers to the period of time she spent in a Groundhog Day loop when her magic manifested as her “freakout,” a term she uses to describe similar experiences by other people. She’s spoken little about the actual loop itself, other than it took “a while.” She seems comfortable traveling around the world, and apparently has at least one hideout set up in case things go south.
She shows little sign of putting down any roots and settling in the dorm. A week after moving in, Fiora is still living out of her suitcase, and the only things she’s added to her dorm room is a PC and K’s litter box.
