Mana of Mayhem
[17:07] Zero|GM> It’s a reasonably warm day in September in North California. The sky is crystal clear above Ravensglass, and the Disseptum Fractio Magicam Academy’s gates stand closed, a security guard at the front, reading a newspaper between checking people in and out of the academy.
[17:08] Zero|GM> Unlike most days, however, there is a second person there, a thin man with shoulder length brown hair, in a business suit. he is escorting those who show up this most unusual day.
[17:09] Zero|GM> For it is the Beginning of a new school year at the academy. And today is the first day of new arrivals.
[17:11] Zero|GM> Upon arrival, and presenting of their letter of acceptance to the academy, you are escorted to a sitting room in a nearby building. The walls are an off-white color, with windows that look out over a reasonable view of the large campus. An aquarium and plants make up the other decorations, along with some paintings hanging from the walls. Oddly, there is no reading material in the room.
[17:11] Zero|GM> Free to act: all>
[17:14] * Miyako is seven and a half feet tall, bright red, and curvy. To say she sticks out would be an understatement. She’s wearing thick black jeans and a tight shirt sporting the words “you aren’t even reading this” positioned perfectly over her chest. She also looks bored, toying with an iphone.
[17:14] Iris> Iris stands in front of one of the windows, a lace fan in one hand. It’s the sort of accessory that goes well with her attire—an elegant dress, not the sort of thing one usually wears out and about. She looks out the window with interest, looking at the campus below as she lightly fans herself against the warmth.
[17:17] Fiora> Fiora takes a moment to unbutton her coat and stuff her hat in a pocket, running a hand through her blonde hair. Glancing around the room and its occupants, Fiora is quick to sling her lone suitcase to the side of a seat before sitting.
[17:22] * Miyako glances up. “So who thinks this is some kinda trap?”
[17:22] Fiora> A sharp scream and loud hiss from outside the room makes Fiora tilt her head for a moment, then shrug, muttering to herself. “Probably won’t eat anyone.”
[17:23] Iris> Iris glances up at that, blinking.
[17:24] * Miyako “Case in point.”
[17:24] Fiora> “I dunno,” she says to the towering red-head. “The letter had awful nice stenography for just being a trap. Too much overhead for a snatch-and-run job, at least.”
[17:26] Iris> Iris looks to Fiora for a moment, considers inquiring about the hiss-and-scream outside, then chooses to address the other point instead. “An interesting place for a trap.”
[17:26] Zero|GM> A few minutes later a woman in a business suit, with waist length flowing green hair walks in, wearing what used to be pristine white gloves. They now have a claw mark or two. She is holding a cat by the scruff of its neck.
[17:28] Zero|GM> “I take it this belongs to one of you?” She says with an obvious bit of distaste, holding the cat at arm’s length. The cat, for it’s part, seems to have an instinctive dislike of the woman.
[17:29] Iris> Iris smiles politely at the newcomer—clearly not a student, probably faculty—but with a hint of puzzlement; her eyes flicker to Fiora.
[17:30] * Miyako “Not it. Only pet I ever had was a mini-pinscher.”
[17:31] Fiora> “Hey, Kosciej,” Fiora waves, and the cat manages to squirm out of the woman’s hand, darting to hide between the tiny space between her suitcase and her chair. “I did tell you to avoid any mauling if you wanted to avoid the carrier next time, Special K.”
[17:32] Fiora> The white-and-brown hisses at the thought for a moment before Fiora unceremoniously drops her hat over him.
[17:32] * Miyako finally looks up from her phone, slowly at Fiora. “You named your cat after ketamine?”
[17:33] Zero|GM> The woman only looks mildly miffed. “I am Miss Yuki Terumi, the head nurse.” She says finally. “And it would seem you are the first arrivals for this year’s class.”
[17:35] Iris> Iris fans herself lightly against the unaccustomed heat, still maintaining her decorous smile—though now it has a hint of bemusement, as well; she does, however, incline her head in acknowledgement of the nurse’s statement.
[17:38] Fiora> “Named himself, more like it. Nickname’s more to keep his ego from getting too uppity,” Fiora says with a smile as she jerks the hat back over the cat’s head, an instant before it would have tilted off. “Figured I’d get here early so I could make with the running and the screaming if I needed to.”
[17:39] Fiora> “Also first dibs on rooms.”
[17:40] Iris> Iris considers that for a moment, nodding. “Sensible.”
[17:42] Iris> She looks thoughtful, but doesn’t comment further at the moment.
[17:42] Zero|GM> The woman reaches into her pocket and pulls out a smartphone or something similar, and reads the screen. “Fiora Niles, Miyako Summerfield, and… Iris von Sepperin, I presume?” The woman pockets the device in her coat pocket, and pulls out three plastic cards. She hands each to their owner. Each is has the approriate name, and the text “Class of 2013” on it. Under that, is the words ‘Seelie Building, Floor 4". They also have a sur
[17:42] Zero|GM> prisingly lifelike rendition of the owner’s face… not just painted or printed on, but carved into the card. On the back is a magnetic stripe, along with the contact pads for a chip-in-card reader to make contact with.
[17:43] * Miyako shrugs. “So long as I
get a room I don’t give a fuck who gets one first.” She stretches, bumps her fist on the ceiling, then puts her phone away.“Huh? Oh, yeah. Summerfield.” she takes hers.
[17:44] Iris> Iris’s smile brightens a bit at her name; she gives a suggestion of a curtsy as her name is read. She takes her card with her free hand, studying it intently.
[17:46] Fiora> “Tchyeah, you say that now, but spend six months with the room next to the bathroom and you’ll beg for anything better.” Fiora takes the card from Terumi’s slightly-clawed hand and holds it next to her phone. She seems more interested in whatever the phone is displaying than what’s actually printed on the card.
[17:48] Zero|GM> “Your building’s resident advisor, Dr. Leon Plott, is actually out of town this week, a robotics convention in San Fransico I believe, so I am filling in for him today.”
[17:48] Fiora> “Doctor Plott. Muhahaha. Ha.” Fiora deadpans at the name, not looking up from her phone.
[17:50] Iris> Iris’s smile takes on an uncertain edge, as if she’s not quite sure whether someone is having a joke at her expense or not. “Doctor… Plot?”
[17:51] Zero|GM> “Yes, he laughs like that too, when people poitn out how silly the name is. He’s also a professor in robotics and quantium theory here.” She shrugs. “So, what questions do you have, before I go any further about talking about the Academy?”
[17:52] Fiora> Fiora flips the card over, glancing between the phone and the card – anyone nearby can see that both are showing an identical image. She saves whatever she was tapping out on the phone and slips them both into her pocket.
[17:52] * Miyako “Yeah, am I gonna have to pay for parking?” she seems to just remember something. “Oh, right. Is this a trap?”
[17:53] Zero|GM> “no, the parking in the garage is part of tuition. And I believe you, Miyako, recieved a rather large scholarship from the Orochi Group.”
[17:53] * Miyako peers at the green haired woman. “You’re gonna have to run that by me again, I thought my parents were paying tuition. To apologize.”
[17:55] Zero|GM> The nurse digs out her PDA again, tapping a few things. “It actually just cleared through the Financial Aid department last night. Your parents are going to likely be surprised to see quite a refund. The Orochi Group, and the Yagami Foundation, both offered scholarships, which covers… pretty much all your tuition other than food.”
[17:55] Iris> Iris’s expression gets somewhat more remote at that, oddly, though it’s hard to say what exactly changes. Something in the eyes, perhaps.
[17:58] Fiora> “Any other ‘surprises’ like that? If the balance on the card is a bank account, I’m pretty sure I didn’t sign any waviers allowing the school access to it.” Fiora pauses for a second, then shrugs. “Not that there was much in there for tuition to begin with, I guess.”
[17:59] * Miyako “I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.”
[17:59] Zero|GM> “I see your peeking ahead.” The nurse says with a smirk. “The balance is currently zero. You can charge things here on campus to your account.”
[18:01] * Miyako frowns down at her card. “I spose ‘food not included’ could be the other shoe…”
[18:01] Zero|GM> “The card also is the key to your floor of the dorm.. And currently, the dorm is in the default layout of suites off of a central shared area. First come, first serve on the keylocks. You, as a class, may change it as you see fit, so long as you get it approved by your RA, and it doesn’t damage structrual integrity of the building.”
[18:04] Iris> Iris doesn’t seem to be particularly interested in the money bit; the bit about being able to modify the dorm layout, however, does seem to catch her interest. “Our RA? Would that be this ‘Dr. Plot’, then?”
[18:06] Zero|GM> “That is correct. He should be back in a few days… baring troubles or interference.”
[18:06] * Fiora ponders what she alterations could get away with, with the help of a quantum physics professor.
[18:07] Zero|GM> "as for food… you do have some food plan avalible, your parents paid for that, Miyako. there’s also plenty of opprotunity to earn some employment, both on or off campus.
[18:07] Iris> Iris’s head tilts ever so slightly at that last word; she arches an eyebrow at the nurse.
[18:08] * Miyako “Yeah, sorry we didn’t tell you your grandfather was an oni…”
[18:10] Iris> Iris looks to Miyako, blinking in surprise, but resumes her scrutiny of the nurse after only a moment.
[18:12] Zero|GM> “In fact, I believe there is a Pizza parlor on the first floor of the Seelie Building. C.C.‘s Pizza and Pasta, if I’m recalling correctly.”
[18:15] Iris> Iris files this away, looking somewhat interested.
[18:16] Zero|GM> “So, any other questions so far?” The nurse keeps away from the feline this entire time.
[18:18] Fiora> Kosciej sneezes disdainfully from beneath the hat.
[18:18] Iris> Iris fans herself thoughtfully, considering, then smiles again. “I have none at the moment, save the location of our dormatories.”
[18:18] * Miyako shakes her head. “No questions you can answer, anyway.”
[18:20] Fiora> Noting the long silence, Fiora sighs and raises her hands out. “Let’s just say what everyone’s thinking. This is a very mysterious School for Strange Shit that has a reputation for being a cult-run nutbin, but also scores within the top tenth percentile of schools in the nation.”
[18:20] Fiora> “Are you going to brainwash us and harvest our organs?” Fiora finishes with all seriousness.
[18:21] Zero|GM> The Nurse nods, and becons with one hand. “I’ll show the way to the building.” She says calmly, waiting for everyone to get their things gathered before leading deeper into the campus, near the central building and park-like square around it. A large building, 15 or so stories high, on the south side of the plaza, has the words “Seelie Building” engraved above the door in flowing script. To one side is a set of large glass doors,
[18:21] Zero|GM> frosted with a simple “C.C.’s” and the image of a pizza. “No more than any other school would be doing, for the brainwashing. And it’s a lot of work just to harvest a bunch of organs.”
[18:21] * Miyako “Hooray for the liberal echo-chamber of nonsense.”
[18:21] Iris> Iris stops dead in her tracks at that question just to stare at Fiona. The fan isn’t even moving.
[18:25] * Miyako bumps straight into Iris, grabbing the smaller girl to keep from sending her flying. “You don’t deal with sarcasm much, I’m guessing.”
[18:25] Zero|GM> “oh, it’s a fair question. We get something similar at least every few years. It’s refreshing when the new kids are honest about what’s worrying them.”
[18:26] Fiora> Fiora nods, shifting Kosciej around in her arm when he tries to hiss at Terumi again. “And she was honest about the brainwashing bit. I can respect that.”
[18:27] * Miyako “We’re going to be surrounded by gifted eighteen to thirty-four year old liberals. We’re gonna brainwash OURSELVES.”
[18:28] Zero|GM> Yuki leads further into the buliding, via the main doors, to an elevator. This one looks more like a cargo-and-person sized lift then the normal small elevator one might normally find. Also of note, instead of a call button, there’s a card slot.
[18:28] Iris> Iris stiffens slightly as Miyako grabs her, then takes a quick breath and composes herself; she smiles to Miyako in thanks, then looks at the other three. “I… see,” she says at last, shaking her head and looking amused.
[18:29] Zero|GM> “Now now, the Catholics have their own devoted building and following on the premesis. You’ll be surrounded by Liberals, Conservatives, and everything in between.”
[18:32] * Miyako pats Iris on the shoulder when she lets the smaller girl go. “We’re at a college. Forgive my skepticism.”
[18:33] Iris> Iris fans herself; she seems thoughtful.
[18:34] Zero|GM> “well, if it helps, there’s also an Agnostic group, a Buddist shrine, a Shinto shrine, a mosque, a few neo-pagan covens, and an Atheist discussion group I can think of off hand around here…”
[18:34] * Miyako “They’re all equally irritating.”
[18:34] Zero|GM> The nurse digs out her own ID card, and puts it into the slot. The elevator’s doors open a few moments later. On the inside is numbers for each floor, and another card reader. The nurse swipes her card again, and presses the fourth floor button.
[18:35] Iris> Even as pre-occupied as she seems to be, Iris notes the floor number.
[18:39] Fiora> “Cards good for the entire building, or just our floor?” Fiora asks, thankful that there was no elevator music she needed to short out.
[18:39] Zero|GM> The elevator brings the entire group up to the fourth floor at a steady pace. not fast enough to be nerve wracking, not slow enough to feel totally sluggish. The doors open to a central living-room like area. across the way is a kitchen/dining area, split off by a half-wall. To either side is a hall leading to doors, rather wide space. Each door is open right now, showing the suite of rooms inside, including a study, a sitting are
[18:39] Zero|GM> a, a bathroom, and a bedroom.
[18:40] Zero|GM> “Your cards are good for your floor, and for getting in the front door after hours.”
[18:42] * Miyako “And they have some kind of bank account attached?”
[18:44] Zero|GM> “A charge account, maxes out at three-hundred bucks. Due within a month before it starts charging interest. Good here on campus.”
[18:45] Iris> Iris frowns slightly at that.
[18:47] Zero|GM> “It’s a convience thing. You are welcome to pay for things however you wish, of course.”
[18:47] * Miyako “I guess that’s nice of the academy to do for people. Suspiciously nice, but hey.”
[18:49] Zero|GM> “Consider it part of what we’re trying to teach past the normal learning stuff. It helps teach real life money management… something some members have a great deal of trouble with.”
[18:49] * Miyako “Well yeah, don’t we have genies who can just summon riches and shit here? Is that a thing?”
[18:50] Fiora> “Not that suspicious,” Fiora says as she looks around the central room, eyeing the accommodations. “It also encourages students to buy things on-campus, which means more revenue.”
[18:51] Zero|GM> “Hmm. I haven’t met any Djinni here, no. And the few I have met were more likely to attempt twisting you in half. The few wishgranters… let’s just say wishing for riches can backfire horribly. We
do have some Fae on campus, though.”
[18:52] * Miyako “Oh, do they do that thing where they give you money and then the next morning you find out your wallet’s full of leaves? Oh, I wonder what the digitial equivalent is. They charge something, then…I dunno, spam emails?”
[18:54] Zero|GM> "The last one who tried to do the riches thing got caught by the IRS. The one before that was found squashed under a pile of gold bars labeled ‘Fort Knox’
[18:57] Fiora> “See? The liberal brainwashing begins: ‘Fear wishes, but fear the government more’!” Fiora says dryly, taking in the view from the windows.
[18:58] * Miyako “If liberal wishing worked, the world would be WAY the fuck different. Health care premiums would grow on trees and nobody would eat meat.”
[19:00] Iris> Iris snorts, still fanning herself; she doesn’t seem to be enjoying the warmth.
[19:01] Zero|GM> Yuki Terumi walks over to the thermostat control, and taps something… apparently the AC control, as the room starts to cool down to a respectable 68 or so degrees.
[19:02] Iris> “Vegetables have their place. Vegetables alone, though… down that path madness lies.” Iris smiles a bit as the room starts to cool slightly.
[19:04] * Miyako flops against the wall, tired of standing. “blah blah meat is murder blah blah.”
[19:06] Zero|GM> The elevator dings a few moments later, and a single janitor pulls in a pallet, with all the delivered clothing and stuff that you might have sent ahead and not carried with you.
[19:07] Zero|GM> “Oh. And your cards also access your mailbox down on the ground floor.” The nurse adds.
[19:08] * Miyako shamelessly grabs a pair of horrifically ugly floral print suitcases and tosses them into one of the far rooms.
[19:11] Iris> Iris brightens at the arrival of her supplies; grabbing some tasteful luggage done in deep violet, she heads for one of the suites to stow it in.
[19:11] Zero|GM> “oh, and Miyako, from your comment, does that mean I should have them send up one of the tofu pizzas for you? Your RA left notice to give the tradtiional greeting to the Seelie dorm of a pizza-a-piece on him.”
[19:12] * Miyako “Tofu is for noodles, not pizza. Nice try.”
[19:12] * Fiora takes a sturdy-looking aluminum case and sets it in her new room, along with her suitcase. There’s the sound of a window opening, and when she returns Kosciej is nowhere to be seen.
[19:14] Zero|GM> “So what would you guys like on your pizzas?” She asks with a grin. “And I should note, someone can be buzzed into the elevator, there’s a call button near the card slot down there, that will get them to the security office, that will reroute their call to you if it’s for you.” She poitns to a screen, a button, and a speaker/microphone combo near the elevator door.
[19:16] * Miyako "Chef’s special. " She states it as though she’s certain the pizza shop will know what that means. “Thanks, by the way. This isn’t your job, I imagine.”
[19:16] Iris> Iris considers the question as she emerges from her room; she eyes the indicated equipment with some uncertainty, but there are more important matters at hand. “What can you have put on pizza?”
[19:16] * Miyako slowly turns to stare at Iris.
[19:17] Zero|GM> “not normally, no. Normally I’m the one helping patch things up after something goes wrong.” Yuki admits calmly. “So, One Chef’s Special, one ‘newbie supreme’…”
[19:18] Fiora> After a few taps to pull up the website, Fiora holds out her myPhone to Iris. “Here, take a look at the menu.”
[19:18] Fiora> “Go ahead and pick something that sounds appetizing; we’ll split it and the ‘newbie supreme’.”
[19:20] Iris> Iris raises her fan and gently fans her face, though it’s almost certainly not because of excess warmth now. Seeing Miyako’s expression, Iris doesn’t return the gaze… at Fiora’s offer, though, Iris blinks, then smiles. “Ah… thank you.” She rather tentatively takes the phone, as if worried about dropping it, studying it for a moment and reading over the information on the screen.
[19:20] Zero|GM> notably the newbie supreme is on the menu. it’s litterally a pizza that is one quarter cheese, one quarter meat-lover’s, one quarter veggie supreme, and the remaining quarter is ‘super supreme’… which would be meat lover’s + veggies.
[19:23] Iris> “Hm… ‘newbie supreme’. That does sound like a good way to start things off,” Iris says; she hesitantly presses the down arrow, smiles faintly when it does what she expects… then she starts getting into some of the more esoteric options. “I… had no idea you could put so many things on pizza. Perhaps I was mistaken about the basic makeup, but… pineapple?”
[19:24] * Miyako shakes her head. "Oh-kay, whatever. " she glances over Iris’ shoulder. “Oh, there’s like, they call it hawaiian. The devil made it up to sow chaos and unhappiness.” she states matter-of-factly.
[19:24] Zero|GM> “I know someone once ordered a Peanut butter Pizza.”
[19:26] Fiora> Peering around Iris’s shoulder, Fiora looks at the menu. “If she’s having the newbie special anyway, make mine a-” she takes another look, “‘Butterfly Effect’.”
[19:27] Iris> Iris blinks, then gives her head a brief shake. “Peanut butter… I… do not think I’m feeling quite that adventurous today.” She nods to Fiora, handing the phone back to her.
[19:27] * Miyako “The hell is that? Ashton Kutcher sucks.”
[19:28] Iris> Iris looks blank.
[19:28] Zero|GM> Yuki nods, and heads for the elevator, apparently to go place the orders.
[19:31] Zero|GM> It’s about twenty minutes later, when the elevator’s ‘call’ box makes a ‘ding dong’ sound.
[19:35] Fiora> “Looks like pizza’s here.” Fiora buzzes the delivery in after glancing at the screen next to the elevator, making a mental note to change the call sound later.
[19:36] Zero|GM> The lady arrives a few moments later. The Chef’s Special is, perhaps surprisingly, ‘cheesburger pizza’. Complete with raw onions and pickles ontop of the cooked hamburger, cheese, pizza sause, and what not.
[19:36] Iris> Iris is busy in her room unpacking. “Ah, excellent!” There is a loud thump—presumably a bag being set down onto the floor—and a moment later Iris emerges from her room.
[19:37] Zero|GM> The Butterfly Effect apparently is Sausage, Mushrooms, Green Olives, onions, and if one looks close, they’d note extra crushed red pepper added to the sause.
[19:38] Zero|GM> “Let’s see… three pizzas, on the RA. Welcome to the Seelie!” She giggles and nods. “Is there anything else you might need?” The smell in the air is of the pizzas, mixed with a light floral scent, not strong like a perfume, but more like being in a garden.
[19:39] * Miyako "Mm. None here, thanks. " she digs out a few dollars, and stuffs them into the nymph’s hand.
[19:40] Iris> “Not I, thank you,” Iris says after a moment’s consideration. She observes Miyako tipping the delivery girl, files that away.
[19:42] Fiora> “Can’t think of anything, thanks.” Fiora takes a flier from where it was taped to the pizza box and places it next to the room’s phone, figuring it’ll see a lot of use in the next few weeks.
[19:42] Zero|GM> each pizza is in a labeled box so it’s obvious who ordered what, The delivery girl smiles at the tip, which gets shoved into an apron pocket. She gives a little curtsey, then heads back down the elevator.
[19:43] * Miyako opens her own eagerly. "I love just handing people money and having them surprise me. "
[19:45] Zero|GM> Perhaps most interestingly is the fact the room’s phone looks like a business phone, with voicemail buttons for each member of the class. And preprogrammed in is the RA’s number,
and the pizza place’s number to the speed dials, leaving a good 98 slots empty.
[19:49] Iris> Iris makes a noncommital sound as she eyes the pizza, picking a slice out of her box at random and beginning to nibble on it.
[19:51] Fiora> “Same building, makes sense,” Fiora notes the numbers store in the phone’s memory, leaving the menu next to it. She takes an experimental bite of her order, then nods in approval. Balancing the plate on one hand, she pours out a bit of food for Kosciej into a bowl, then leaves it on the kitchen floor.
[19:51] * Miyako is almost immediately done with her first slice and reaching for another. “Mmh. So, anyone care to share their story?”
[19:55] Fiora> “Orphan. Blogger. Good with machines. Time dickery. Have a cat.” Fiora speaks matter-of-factly between bites of the pizza, holding her hand up and counting them off on her fingers. She takes out a second slice after pouring more red pepper on it, considering her still-bent thumb.
[19:55] Fiora> “Good pizza.” She stretches her thumb out, wiggles her fingers once, and shrugs.
[19:56] Iris> Iris breaks out coughing violently for a moment, but gets the first piece down without choking to death; as Fiora speaks, Iris grabs a second piece of pizza, this time from a different quarter. “Want to trade a piece of mine for one of yours?”
[19:57] * Miyako "mhrphm. Yeah. " she glances over at Fiora. “Is that seriously it, though? Did you teach yourself or is it innate?”
[20:01] Fiora> “Time stuff came on its own, machines I taught myself with some help from the internet.” Fiora considers for a moment, chewing a slice contemplatively. “Still don’t know about the cat.”
[20:01] Iris> Iris has her second piece finished off in short order, and lightly snags a piece of Miyako’s as she listens; there are still six pieces left in her own box, including both pieces of meat lover’s and one of the super supremes.
[20:02] Zero|GM> The cat wanders in to eat some of the offered food. It offers a merow at Iris and Miyako on its way past.
[20:02] * Miyako nods thoughtfully, moving the box a little closer to Iris. “What about you? Oh, hi kitty. Iris, is this innate for you? Is it innate for EVERYONE?”
[20:04] Iris> Iris starts.
[20:05] Iris> “Me? Mm… for the most part, no; my abilities were learned, refined.”
[20:06] Zero|GM> The kitty purrs loudly suddenly, nomming on something in its dish.
[20:08] Iris> Iris raises a hand to her mouth and coughs, gathering her thoughts. “I agree as to the ‘good pizza’ point,” she says, smiling suddenly. “As to the rest…” She thinks.
[20:09] Fiora> As Iris answers, Fiora opens her phone and checks something. A frenzied bit of tapping later, she nods and pulls a handful of ones and fives from her pocket. Keeping a five dollar bill out and stuffing the rest back in, she puts the money through the phone.
[20:09] Iris> “Born far away. Lived in a castle. Affinity for light.” She pauses. “I cannot say that I have had a cat, though.”
[20:10] Fiora> She pulls a two-liter bottle of soda from the phone, and reaches back in for… change and a reciept from C.C.‘s, apparently. “Knew there was something we were forgetting,” she mutters as she opens the bottle with a hiss, then goes in search for some cups in the kitchen.
[20:11] * Miyako just stares for a while. "Oh-kay, I can’t do anything that cool."
[20:11] Iris> She pauses again. “And… I admit I am somewhat unfamiliar with this place.” She looks at Fiora and the phone. “I did not know phones could do that.”
[20:13] Fiora> “‘Good with machines’,” Fiora repeats as she returns and sets three cups down on the table. “No ice, though; freezer’s still coming down to temp.”
[20:15] Iris> “Ah.” Iris ponders. “That must come in very handy,” she says, seeming impressed.
[20:16] Fiora> “An actual castle?” Fiora asks, surprised. “No wonder you were so uncomfortable in the heat; I’ve heard they’re impossible to properly heat.”
[20:17] * Miyako “Yeah, stone sucks for keeping heat, and they’re big and drafty. Did you SERIOUSLY live in a castle?”
[20:18] Iris> Iris laughs; it’s more self-conscious than anything, though. “Yes, I did. Castle Sepperin, high in the mountains. And yes, it was drafty… but as they say, home is where the heart is.”
[20:19] Iris> Something flickers in her eyes at that, but she quickly takes a sip of soda.
[20:20] * Miyako nods. “So I’m guessing you knew about this hidden world stuff already.”
[20:22] Iris> Iris nods and smiles again. “Yes. My family is a noble house of some repute in the eastern magocracy.” She shakes her head at that. “‘Old blood’, I believe it is said.”
[20:24] Iris> She swirls her cup of soda around, then takes another drink; smiles aside, she seems a bit morose on this subject.
[20:25] * Miyako nods. “And I thought it was pretty neat when my Uncle showed me his dingy mobile home full of magic crap. I uh, guess you probably realized I wasn’t always like this.”
[20:26] Fiora> “‘Magocracy.’ Really.” For all the nonchalance Fiora displayed with the soda, she manages to infuse those two words with untold depths of ‘go ahead, pull the other one.’
[20:27] Iris> Iris raises her head, jolted out of whatever dark reflections she’s looking at; she considers for a moment. “Now that you mention it, you did say something about your parents not telling you of your heritage…”
[20:28] * Miyako rolls her eyes. “Oh, so you believe time manipulating magic but not that a bunch of mages would get together to order people around.” she blinks, Iris derailing her train of thought. "Yeah uh. Up until two months ago I was totally just a freshman in college. I heard about a lot of this after the fact, from Uncle, who did the binding ritual. "
[20:30] * Miyako she clears her throat, sitting up. “My grandfather is an Oni. He was defeated and his essence or something tied into this big expensive urn. They bound anyone in the family who had his blood, so they’d be…like, normal. So here I am, going to college, and we have class in an art museum, displaying Japanese artwork…you see where I’m going with this…”
[20:30] Iris> Iris glances to Fiora for a moment at her comment, a hint of a smile on her lips, but it’s… an odd one. As Miyako’s starts to tell about her story, though, Iris listens.
[20:32] Iris> “I think so,” Iris nods.
[20:32] * Miyako "Getting too close to The Deciever’s essence cracked the ritual apart and, over about the course of two weeks or so, here ya go. " she shrugs. “Turns out the freshman fifteen is real. For me it was about two hundred. And about two and a half feet.”
[20:35] Fiora> “And he just… left the urn in a museum?” Fiora considers the pizzas for a long moment, then takes a slice of the supreme. She picks off a bit of sausage and holds it close to the ground for Kosciej to contemplate. “That seems a little reckless, compared to hiding, uh, anywhere else.”
[20:36] Zero|GM> Special K swipes the sausage from Fiora with a purr.
[20:37] Iris> Iris is amused.
[20:37] * Miyako shakes her head. "I did kinda almost hit him for that one, but it was the best place for it. My grandfather’s shtick is deception. Hiding in plain sight is…what’s the word…metaphor drives magic. Or at least the kind my Uncle knew. "
[20:42] Iris> Iris appears somewhat uncomfortable as she considers Miyako’s story. “Then… are things worse for you now, do you think?” she asks, her expression intent.
[20:44] * Miyako “It’s been two months. I’m still the same person…I DID spend a long time being the smallest person I know…and I guess I can just shapeshift, to a degree, if I wanted. Grandpa is still locked up, so…I guess things are better.”
[20:45] Iris> Iris studies Miyako for a long moment, then smiles. “I am glad for you, then.”
[20:46] * Miyako flashes a smile. “It’s just a lot to learn. Even if it’s just been two months. Uncle helped.”
[20:48] Fiora> “Alright. House Rule Number One,” Fiora lends her words enough emphasis that they’re clearly in Capital Letters. “Rampaging demonic grandfathers: right out of the house guest list. All opposed?”
[20:48] Fiora> She lets it hang in the air for a moment. “House Rule One passes by majority.”
[20:48] Iris> Iris giggles brightly.
[20:49] * Miyako “Sure whatever. The vase is in California, y’know.” she’s finished all but one slice of her pizza in somewhat record time.
[20:51] Fiora> “Tchyeah, but so are we, and now you’ve just jinxed it,” Fiora shakes her head solemnly, sliding her pizza to be in Miyako’s reach.
[20:53] * Miyako "It’s like, really far away is my point. Anyway if he gets out, it’s not UP to me to put him back. " she takes a slice, nodding.
[20:53] Iris> “There is… one more thing.”
[20:54] Fiora> “If there are interdimensional assassins hunting you for being the last heir of the magocracy’s rulers, I’m going to ask for our security deposit back,” Fiora grins wryly.
[20:56] Iris> Iris looks at Fiona in silence for a long moment, her expression very carefully blank.
[20:56] Iris> “Not… exactly,” she says.
[20:57] * Miyako “…Not exactly doesn’t mean no, y’know…”
[20:57] Fiora> “The assassins or the lost heir?” Fiora clarifies. “I could get behind the lost heir idea, at least.”
[21:00] Iris> “Mm. I am an heiress of sorts… though my family’s fortunes have fallen in the past few centuries. Fallen quite a lot,” Iris sighs.
[21:01] Iris> “But…” she considers for a long moment, trying to figure out how to phrase it, then sighs and gives up. “My father does not know I’m here.”
[21:01] * Miyako looks very relieved. “Fuck, is that all?”
[21:05] Iris> Iris looks cross. “Father is overprotective, which is understandable, but…” she shakes her head, trailing off. “Let me just say that while I miss home, I do not relish the prospect of being dragged back to it.”
[21:05] * Miyako "I could make sure they grab me instead. "
[21:08] Iris> Iris looks at Miyako, considers it for a moment, then breaks out into laughter again for a long minute. “Aha… I… I appreciate that,” she says as she finally gets herself back under control. “I would be surprised if they made that mistake, though,” she says, but she’s clearly grateful for the offer.
[21:09] * Miyako folds her arms. “Oh yeah? Watch.” In a short puff of smoke, Miyako shrinks, her clothes warping. Seconds later and she’s a quite good copy of Iris.
[21:10] Fiora> “Ah, runaway heiress! Well, that’s fine; I don’t think either Miyako or me would spill the beans, so he won’t hear it from us.” Fiora thinks for a moment. “Maybe talk with the RA when he gets in. Make sure the campus isn’t going to send your mail back home or something; it wouldn’t-”
[21:10] Fiora> She pauses as Miyako transforms. “Okay, now that’s cool.”
[21:11] * Miyako “Ha. I’ve been practicing.” she smiles at Iris over her own fan.
[21:13] Iris> Iris studies her reflection carefully, nodding after a thorough inspection… then she smiles again. “Perhaps they could make such a mistake after all,” she concedes, before growing serious. “Father would be ill-pleased, though, once he discovered he had been so thoroughly—what is the word? hood-winked?”
[21:14] * Miyako “Well, I can imagine that, sure. I did practice one other thing, though. I practiced ‘shoot him, he’s the fake one’ with my uncle.” she looks down at her clothes. “Iris, aren’t you uncomfortable?”
[21:16] Iris> Iris just smiles. “Not particularly, but… I’m used to wearing such attire, I suppose.”
[21:20] Iris> “Of course, if it gets to be too much, I can make do with somewhat less… restrictive attire. It’s not wise to practice such a trick too often, though, lest you be unmasked,” Iris blushes lightly.
[21:22] Fiora> “Then I suppose I had better come clean as well. Kosciej here,” Fiora scoops the cat up, holding him in her arms to face the others, “is really the immortal wizard Kosciej, whose legend of hiding his fiery soul in an egg is the basis for the modern liche!”
[21:22] Fiora> Kosciej yawns, unimpressed.
[21:23] Fiora> “Sorry, I got nothing.” She lets the cat go. “I figure one of us should be the responsible one without any hidden enemies or family members or ninja death squads out for blood. Guess that’s me by default.”
[21:23] Iris> Iris blinks, then tilts her head. She then plucks a piece of sausage off of her cooling pizza and tosses it lightly at the cat.
[21:24] * Miyako folds her arms. “Uh-huh. Oh! Idea! Iris, how about this?” Iris number two’s clothes warp to a gothic dress. It looks at least a shade more comfortable, at least.
[21:24] * Fiora takes a picture with her phone.
[21:26] * Miyako shows up properly in the picture. Apparently, her ability to shift shapes and warp clothes is a physical one, not just an illusion.
[21:26] Iris> Iris considers, tilts her head, considers again. “Hm… that doesn’t look bad at all, Miyako.” She smiles.
[21:26] Fiora> Kosciej bats the sausage a few times then pointedly ignores it until Iris turns her attention away. When she turns back, the sausage is gone and the cat is grooming his whiskers.
[21:27] * Miyako nods. “We’ve gotta go shopping for you.” With that, she warps back to what she looked like when she showed up, snarky shirt and all.
[21:27] Iris> “I think I would like that,” Iris says, smiling again.
[21:30] Fiora> “We can make a day of it,” Fiora agrees. “This place is going to need a few things before we finish getting settled in – at least if we’re going to survive on more than pizza for the next while.”
[21:31] * Miyako "Uncle told me this place has a bar and a japanese restaurant. "
